Construction workers and security officials of the company who spoke to Telegraph confirmed the theft but could not supply details. An official with Dema Security company which supervises the area where the robbery occurred narrated how their men at the gate where over powered by the robbers who were heavily armed before tying their hands and legs and locked them in the security room at the gate.
The official who pleaded for anonymity explained that the robbers collected the gate keys from them and brought in a lorry into which the hoodlums comfortably loaded all their loot and left the way they came. Effort to speak with the owner of the petrol station was not possible, as he was said to have gone out of town.
Sources told us that the condition of the area makes it difficult for efficient security delivery as the area is neither fenced nor well lit in addition to the fact that the university authorities do not give the security officers on duty the definite period to allow in flow of traffic into the place.
Another officer who also pleaded anonymity lamented the absence of police patrols along the East-West road, which would have given protection to the security men inside the campus. The three security men who were no duty when the robbery stroke have been taken to the Rumuokoro Police Station for necessary interrogation.
